...Speaking of High School and the Drama that comes with it...

Dear Scott Godin,

As you know, throughout our high school yearbook, in the senior section, there are quotes and statistics gleaned from the senoir surveys Mrs. Gearin gave out.

If you would, please, note, that on page 52, there is a quote from me. It's one of those prompts, like "If I could have one wish..." and "When I was little..." It states, "When I was little, I watched Scott Godin eat paste in kidnergarten."

This, my friend, is a lie. I can't remember if you were in my kidnergarten class, which, by the way, was Mrs. Turpin's morning class. I remember people eating paint, but not until third grade, and I'm not entirely sure who... we looked so different fifteen years ago.

I sincerely apologize for flagging you as a paste-eater senior year. Truth is, I had a pretty hefty crush, I guess, on you, that only intensified in those latter years of our high school careers... the ones where you sat behind me in English.

I'm not really sure why, in the moment, senior year, I wrote that about you- I speculate, though, that it was because I thought it'd get a smile out of you, and the real ones, those were rare after junior year. I'm petty sure it did, but my memory is not terribly reliable. I hope it did, I guess.

Regardless, people who can smile like you can should smile often... but that's neither here nor there.

Sorry about the paste thing,
Nicole

so, my dad and i went down with the minivan to pick up the rest of my stuff that couldn't fit in my honda yesterday, which was fun, because i got to hang out with my dad. i still have to clean up around the apartment. i figured i'd go down tomorrow and do it, my dad wasn't too keen on sitting around and waiting for me to sweep and mop and scrub or whatever. then i can stop at wrentham on the way home.. i need new jeans, my old ones are completely dessimated.

on another note, the episode of ER that is on TNT right now is the one where kem miscarries, and carter cries and cries and cries, and noah wyle does that so well, he made me cry.

have to work at 3.. my last shift at CVS ever, i hope. i'm going to camp on june 6th, and hopefully i'll have something lined up or when i get back. dunno. probably i'll be headed back into the drone of lower level corporate scuffing, though. we'll see.

for now though, i'm enjoying louging around on the couch in my pyjamas watching ER and Judging Amy reruns. it'll get old by friday, i'm sure. besides, i've got a massive pile of crap behind the couch that needs to be put away, and a bedroom that needs to act like a bedroom and not a walk in closet. that's friday's project.

busy coupla days.

ok. normally, i like to just read the reviews of episodes, and i never really bother writing my own. mostly i like any csi ep, some more than others, and the ones i really like i download. generally i can just brush off opinions i don't agree with, and truthfully, they often make me think long and hard about the scene/character/behavior in question. as a general rule, i steer clear of csifiles and everything they say, because they hate anna belknap unconditionally, and i happen to like her as an actress, and i like how she plays her character. however, i do read the links posted in the news section of crimelab.nl, generally they are harmless, and somewhat interesting.

yesterday was no exception. yesterday, they posted their review of 'the good, the bad, and the dominatrix.' and i snapped.

this is what she said about thegrissom and sara relationship:

"Another frustrating aspect of the episode is Sara's muted reaction to learning Lady Heather and Grissom may have been intimate. Overall, I'm a fan of the understated way the writers have handled the Grissom/Sara relationship. While CSI: NY has gone into overdrive with the ill-advised Danny/Lindsay pairing, shoving their banter into every scene the characters share, CSI allows Grissom and Sara to interact as co-workers most of the time, without feeling the need to remind the audience at every turn that the pair are seeing each other."

I'd like to review the review, if I may.

First off, as far as 'Sara's muted reaction' is concerned, i saw it as restrained professionalism, and an almost crippling fear of outing them in the workplace, because Grissom is her direct superior, and while Ecklie won't fire Grissom (as per protocol, I would think) he has been more than tempted to fire Sara in the past, and sleeping with her boss not only tarnishes her professional reputation, but it also would certainly have him grappling for her firearm and her vest in less than a minute. both their jobs are in danger. He'd get a huge slap on the wrist, perhaps lose a portion of personality credibility, but she'd have to move to another city just to find work.

and really. is anyone surprised that Grissom and Heather went/are intimate? I'm not.

Understated way in which the writers portrayed the Grissom/Sara relationship... Hmm. Alright. I have a number of objections here. To say that it has been portrayed understatedly is not doing it justice. I don't ship Grissom and Sara, but I understand them. And while the show takes place mostly on the clock, what we see of the Grissom Sara relationship is what we should see, putting those personalities in that enviornment. Sara, having wanted this brand of intimacy with Griss for so many years, is more than willing to let him define the structures and barriers of their relationship, and takes her cues from him, in particular, this season. Last season she was a bit more rash, a bit more outspoken, but post-rashomama, the heat's been turned down on her fire. Maybe it's because she's finally got the man. maybe it's because they are violating policy.

Definitely, though, it's because that's how Grissom plays it, and she is more than happy to play along. I've studied Grissom for many years. He misses social cues, he's dispassionate to the human emotion, he thrives on the science of the job. During 'the execution of Catherine Willows,' catherine says that being asked to sit with the roths while mathers is executed is why she keeps doing this job, meaning, the closure forensics can bring to victim's families, the satisfaction of solving the puzzle. grissom replies "All the paints match all the victims except for Charlene Roth. See, being capable of matching paint samples that are fifteen years apart that's why I keep doing this work." Or, in 'the accused is entitled,' catherine asks desperately for some help on the stand, the defense is obliterating their credibility and therefore, their evidence, and therefore their case... grissom asks if she knows where he can find full body shots of tom haviland... it proves to be relevant, but tactless nonetheless. in 'chasing the bus,' one of the survivors is distraught and is at the scene days after, lost without her dead boyfriend... grissom asks, incredolously, "Why are you here?" and he has no idea. the list of examples goes on and on... Grissom doesn't ingore the human element... he doesn't see the human element. it's lost on him almost completely. (even that has it's exceptions- his speech in 'butterflied,' his reaction to heather in pirates of the 3rd reich, his banter with the rollercoaster guy in 'turning the screw,' asking sofia out, his feelings for terry miller, his concern and reservations for brass when he has to call the shots in 'way to go.')

all and all, though, Grissom lacks that innate ability to read people.. he acknowledges it as part of being a criminalist when he has a monologue about losing his hearing in 'the hunger artist,' but he isn't at all very good at it. he consistantly exhibits signs of Asperger's Syndrome, a "pervasive developmental disorder on the autistic spectrum" I really think Grissom has AS. He is a study in the defining characteristics and criteria of the syndrome. it's most easily noted when he goes off without explanation, leaving room for a comic look or remark from brass... ("that's nice, Gil. WHen I see a gorilla, I'll arrest him." and the like.) it's common for people with AS to have an extrordinarily high IQ, and a tendency to excel at adademics.

This translates into his personal life. I don't think grissom is consciously downplaying their relationship at work.. he's simply distracted by the science and the academia that is involved in his profession. the hours he pulls for the county are completely devoted to the county. as it should be, he's a professional, and he's an administrator. that's the example he needs to set, nevermind that its second nature to him. while it is clear that he is affectionate toward sara, and that he cares about her deeply, his mind cant help but be regimented within the structures of science when he's on the clock. and i think sara is taking her cues from him... and he's all but oblivious to their relationship on the job, unless he's reacting to something she says... like the catholic comment in 'double cross' that results in him saying a placative "yes dear" and their conversation leaving the brothel at the beginning of 'ending happy' where grissom tells her, in a logic and a structure littered with AS tendencies, that he does, in fact love her. (sex wihtout love makes him sad, and sara makes him happy.) Sara understands grissom and his aspergers, and accepts his quirks, and finds them endearing, i think. Each week, it's sort of fun to watch her facial expressions, because you really can see that she's just completely enamored with him, and i think, as well, that she sees a different side of grissom we havent been privy to, and i have a sneaking suspicion his relationship style is strikingly similar to that of his working style.

as far as danny and lindsay being shoved into overdrive, that's who they are. in order to put characters into relationships that are realistic, and that work with their personalities, the relationships themselves need to be tailored to fit, and allowed to grow, and explode when necessary.

Danny is emotive, and irrational, and outspoken, and hotheaded, and rash and sly. Grissom is none of those things. Danny solves crimes in a hardened, tough, streetsmart, wise-cracking, barreling powerful energy, concerned with the evidence, yeah, but driven by the need to find justice, the need to lock up the perp, always wins over. his passion for science is rivaled by his passion for his city, and his unyielding drive to lock up the bad guy. He's got hybrid ethics to begin with, and he's no stranger to bending the rules beyod elasticity. His heart dangles on his sleeve by a few worn out threads. His feelings dont get in the way, his feelings are his way. he's nearly twenty years younger than grissom, as well, and the generation that each belongs to can aid in some ways of explaining their different approaches to their personal lives. as well as their experiences on the job, and their educational background, their areas of expertise.

to expect danny to love in the same capacity as grissom is cruel and unfair. they are apples and oranges. they are both men, they are both criminalists, they are both intelligent, capable, devoted, and passionate about their jobs. that's about where the similarities end, however. danny messer and gil grissom are polar opposites.

i think danny and lindsay's relationship is being portrayed perfectly, just as is. it fits who they are, what they are, where they are. their relationship will last. it'll be bumpy, and rough, uncomfortable, awkward, but relationships are just that. danny and lindsay are two completely different people... but their chemistry is thick and heavy, and neither of them will escape it.

the epitome of the grissom and danny comparison can be seen in their contrasting bedroom styles. grissom sat on the bed, fully clothed, relaxed, danny is already half naked, pulling lindsay's shirt off, intent on focusing his attentions on her. the contrast in those two scenes, the closing scene of 'way to go' and the promotional flick from 'snow day' illustrates just why danny cannot love like grissom, and grissom cannot love like danny.

grissom loves sara deeply.
danny loves lindsay with everything he's got.

it's their personalities that drive the portrayal of the relationship... and the chemistry between grissom and sara is of a very different kind than that of danny and lindsay. ergo, their relationships are not comperable.

at all.

so, woman-who-wrote-the good the bad and the dominatrix-review, fuck off. clearly you don't understand who danny messer is at all.

there. i feel better. thanks for letting me rant.

4.15.47

it was sixty years ago today that Jackie Robinson made his professional baseball debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field, against the Boston Braves. He played first base, and went 0 for 3.

Robinson, who wore the number 42, was the first black player in the history of major league baseball. After breaking the color barrier, Jackie remained with the Dodgers until 1956, retiring after a accomplished, successful career, facing a trade deal that had him slated to report to San Fransisco in 1957.

He played on 6 world series teams. He was a six time all star. Winner of the 1947 ROY award, and the 1949 MVP award, both from the National League. He also won the very first rookie of the year award. He was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a second lieutenant in the US army from 1942-1944. He was born in Cairo, GA, on January 31, 1919, the youngest of five children.

In 1947, he played in 151 games, batted a dignified .297, led the league in stolen bases, and accepted the rookie of the year award. In 1948, he moved to second base, and played out the remainder of his career there. In his career, he hit .311, and had more walks than strikeouts. He currently holds the record for most home steals by a player post world war one, with 19.

He was inducted into Cooperstown in 1962, alongside pitcher Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians, center fielder Edd Roush of the Reds and manager Bill "Deacon" McKechnie also of the Reds. His uniform number was retired by the Dodgers along with that of Roy Campenella's, and Sandy Koufax's.

In his final public appearance, before game 2 of the 1972 World Series, an ailing Jackie made it known that his wish was to see a black manager of a major league baseball team. He didn't live to see it. Frank Robinson (no relation) accepted the post on the Indians, however, for the 1974 season. Jackie died ten days after appearing at the world series, on October 24, 1972, and is interred in Brooklyn, the borough where he changed the face of baseball forever.

On April 15th, 1997, the number 42 was retired throughout baseball, in honor of Jackie Robinson.

Ken Griffey Jr approached Commissioner Bug Selig about a tribute for the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game. Selig extendded an invitation to all major league teams, for anyone on any roster to wear Jackie's number during gametime. Over 200 players are donning 42 to pay homage to Jackie today.

Of the Arizona Diamondbacks - CB Bucknor Bob Melvin, Lee Tinsley, Tony Clark, Orlando Hudson, Scott Hairston, Chris Young.
CSI: Miami and I are in a fight.

I do not care to elaborate.

In light of being dumped by my tv boyfriend Danny Messer (for Lindsay Monroe, who can blame him. Our break up was amicable) I was tempted to find respite with a particular CSI in southern Florida. After careful consideration, I'm trudging back to Vegas, to beg Gregory to have me back. It really was Greg I loved so dearly all along. I only hope he'll take me back.

...

on another note, while I was typing this post, my mother called me, and immediately started yelling at me, telling me that "don't I know that she's at my cousin Scott's confirmation? don't I know that she can't answer the phone in the church? What's so important that I had to interrupt?"

I didn't call her. I knew she was at Scotty's confirmation.

This was the conversation:

"I told you not to call me tonight, I'm at confirmation."
"Huh? I didn't call you."
"But I have a voicemail. The phone says I have a voicemail."
"It's not from me."
"How is it not from you? No one else has this number, except for you and the people in this room. Why did you call me?"
"I didn't call you."
"Who called me, then?"
"I don't know, Mom. Check the voicemail."
"Huh?"
"Check the voicemail."
"Why?"
"If someone called you, and left a voicemail, you can listen to it, and see who it is."
"....Oh."

duh. God, Ma.
So funny.

like, what was *that* about?

so i got a phone message from my mom, saying that she got a call from kathy roy, the owner of the dance company i used to dance with, saying that she's doing a 'blast from the past' piece in the recital this year, and that she wants me to be in it.

i'm all about it, if she wants me and the thirty pounds i've gained since high school, and my feet that haven't been in my pointe shoes in years. but it's like riding a bike, and i was never overly graceful anyway.

should be a good time :)
